5th Grade: Ms. Leiva & Ms. Scott Homework Contact Information Learning at home provides extra practice for skills already introduced and worked on during the school day. You will have homework every night. You are required to record your homework assignments in your planner every day. Ms. Lindsay Leiva lleiva@stcharles.k12.la.us Ms. Tiffany Scott tscott@stcharles.k12.la.us Expectations and Goals Over the course of the 2018-2019 school year, we will be learning and growing each day. We will solve and explain problems as mathematicians. We will be exploring various concepts to become better readers and writers. We will analyze documents as historians. We will question things around us like scientists. You will be held to high expectations both academically and behaviorally. Strive toward reaching your goals. Incomplete work, poor attitudes, and other non-productive behaviors will not put you on a path for success. Expect greatness from yourself, and great things will happen. Respect yourself. Respect others. Respect the environment. At Luling Elementary, we live by these 3 rules. Throughout the year, you will learn how to display respectful behaviors. If you cannot follow our rules of respecting yourself, respecting others, and respecting the environment, you will receive a logical consequence. Some of these consequences could include going to the think chair, taking a break, having lunch with Ms. Gaubert to discuss any problems, completing a reflection form, etc. If you continue to disobey the rules, you will receive a behavior referral, which may come with a more severe consequence. You will also be held responsible for following the LES Expectations. These expectations must be followed no matter where you are in school and no matter what teacher you are with. We will also spend some time during the first week of school establishing some more classroom expectations. You will help me to create these expectations. It is important for us to follow rules and expectations so that you and your classmates can have a successful fifth grade year. Every student will be held accountable for following every rule and every expectation.

Additional Policies Expect More. Achieve More. Wednesday Folders These folders will be sent home every week on Wednesday. These folders will include important school documents/flyers, graded work, conduct grade, missed homework assignments, and progress reports. You and your parent or guardian must sign and return the folder by Friday. You and your parent or guardian’s signature lets me know that you are aware of your progress in school. Because you will take most of your assessments on Edulastic (an assessment website), you will be responsible for looking at your graded assignments on the Edulastic website. Technology This school year, you will have access to Google Chromebooks throughout the school day. These Chromebooks will be used during instructional time for research, learning, and assessments. The Chromebooks cannot be taken home, but you can access your account through any device at home. However, you cannot change any work at any time. Please keep in mind that everything has a time stamp in Google, and I will be able to see what is being done. In addition, if you damage a Chromebook, you are responsible for paying for any damages. It is important that you are on time every day! Other Policies You may have bottled water in the classroom and a healthy snack as long as it’s not noisy or too messy. We will eat snack during our Enrichment time. Raise your hand to speak. Come prepared to class with your materials and a positive attitude. Be respectful to everyone. Clean up after yourself. Respect the property in the classroom. Be an active participant in the classroom. Follow all school and classroom expectations. Expect More. Achieve More.

What will we be learning this year? Math During the course of the school year, we will study several different topics in Math. We will spend each class reviewing challenging concepts through small group instruction and learning a new lesson. You will take a quiz after every topic learned. We will also spiral questions on quizzes and tests. You can expect Math homework on a nightly basis, both spiral homework and homework from the Eureka lesson. With Eureka math, you will be expected to be able to explain your thinking and solve for the correct answers. You need to know your multiplication and division facts fluently. We will cover the following topics throughout the school year: Module 1: Place Value and Decimal Fractions Module 2: Multi-Digit Whole Number and Decimal Fraction Operations Module 3: Addition and Subtraction of Fractions Module 4: Multiplication and Division of Fractions and Decimal Fractions Module 5: Addition and Multiplication with Volume and Area Module 6: Problem Solving with the Coordinate Plane ELA This school year, your ELA class will combine reading and writing instruction through Guidebooks 2.0. We will read books, articles, and novels. Some things we will read together, with a partner, or with a group, and some books you will be responsible for reading on your own. You will be responsible for writing both constructed responses and extended responses based on things we have read in class. You will also be responsible for participating in class discussions. We will study the following units this school year: Unit 1: Wonderstruck Unit 2: Making of a Scientist Unit 3: The Birchbark House Social Studies This year, you will learn social studies every day. We will center our learning around different types of documents – artifacts, letters, photographs, maps, etc. We will focus on answering key questions, researching concepts, and writing extended responses. We will study the following units throughout the school year: Unit 1: Indigenous Cultures of the Americas – What is a civilization? Unit 2: European Exploration – What happens when cultures collide? Unit 3: Settlement of the Present-Day United States – How are civilizations established? Unit 4: Colonial Advancements – How do civilizations advance? Unit 5: The French and Indian War – How does war shape the development of civilizations? Science This year, we will be studying the new Louisiana State Standards for Science. These standards focus on an anchor phenomenon in which you will use science to make sense of things that happen in our world. We will also think like engineers to solve problems. We will learn to ask questions and answer those questions based on science concepts. We will study the following units throughout the school year: Unit 1: Matter and Its Interactions Unit 2: Matter and Energy Unit 3: Ecosystems Unit 4: Earth’s Systems Unit 5: Earth’s Place in the Universe
