Limestone and its Uses WALT: Explain some uses of limestone

Last lesson we learnt that… Limestone is ……….. That it can react with …………………. to produce ……………………………. gas

Common Uses of Limestone Buildings and statues Made into lime to use in agriculture Used in making cement

Use in Agriculture Acid rain can make some soils acidic This can be bad for plants and farmers find their crops do not grow well Therefore they add lime – to neutralise the acid in the soil.

We are going to test some soil samples from around school to see how acidic they are You will filter water through your soil and then test the pH WHEN FINISHED, answer Q4 on P.64 of the KS3 Science books. Include a sub-heading.

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Limestone Industry Limestone is a valuable natural resource, used to make things such as glass and concrete. Limestone quarries are visible from long distances and may permanently disfigure the local environment. Limestone quarrying provides employment opportunities that support the local economy in towns around the quarry. Quarrying is a heavy industry that creates noise and heavy traffic, which damages people's quality of life.

Prep Imagine you are either a limestone mining company representative or a villager in the article we have seen. Write a letter to the local village leader about why the mine should or should not be there. Remember, you are on ONE side only of the debate.

Plenary Think, pair and share 5 facts about limestone from the last 2 lessons.
