Presentation transcript:

The Parish University   ‘I loved reading about Parish University and I think that is a really fantastic project – the comments from your graduates really do speak for themselves. It is wonderful that children, who previously thought that going to university was not a path that was open to them, are imparted with such self-belief and determination to reach their potential. I want this to be a country which provides everyone with brilliant life chances, and I hope that more schools follow the inspirational example which you set.’ The Rt Hon Justine Greening, Secretary of State for Education.

Why? To raise the children’s aspirations and their sense of achievement To increase the children’s awareness of universities To develop life long key skills To give the children the opportunity to learn and experience new and interesting things To have Fun!

What is it? COURSES & PROJECT The University course is made up from four units. The children will need to complete all of the units to pass the first year of the course – this will be the ‘Bachelor Degree’. COURSES & PROJECT

The Courses To pass the study unit to the children will need to attend two courses and pass the practical tests during the course sessions. The children can choose from some of the following topics: Safety •Photography Emergency First Aid • Young Engineers Librarian • French World Faiths • Programming The children will also need to complete one project , which will have to be completed by February and can be any of a selection of topics including: • Meteorologist • Environmental Conservation • Global Issues • Local Knowledge • Navigator • Writer • Astronomer • Nature Lover • Football Enthusiast • Poetry Lover

Our British Values The Magna Carta Famous Britons: Alexander Flemming; Robert Peel; Mary Seacole; William Shakespeare; Horatio Nelson; Florence Nightingale. The Parish Café Meeting and Greeting Introducing yourself Making conversation The children will need to join us on at least two of the cultural visits. The visits will be educational, for example to Art Galleries and Museums. We will also visit a university, so that the children can see for themselves what a university could offer them in the future. Most of our visits will be free or subsidised but there may on occasions be a small donation required to cover the coach costs.

Sponsored Walk To pass the course children must also take part in a sponsored walk. The sponsored walk will take place on a Saturday in March. Children will need to take part in this and will be expected to raise, at least, £25 sponsorship. This sponsorship covers some of the costs of running the programme so it is expected that all children take part. Children who are unable to take part will be expected to complete the walk in their own time and bring in the £25.

D Degree Level – Good Pass H Honours Level – Excellent Pass Completing the Course On the completion of each unit or project, it will be marked and graded. The grade achieved will depend on the standard of work. M Merit – Pass D Degree Level – Good Pass H Honours Level – Excellent Pass Other levels for 2nd and 3rd years. For the children who are in the second or third year of this project there will be additional (higher level) courses on offer and a different level of award including Masters, Doctorate and for the first time this year Professor.

Completing the Course Graduation If students successfully complete the degree, they will be invited (with family members) to an award ceremony. This will take place at a university. The children will get to wear a university ‘cap and gown’ to receive their graduation certificate.
