National Data Management Policies: The case of Germany Alexia Katsanidou IASSIST 06.06.2014 Toronto, Canada

The basics In 1998 published the German Research Council (DFG) its “Rules of Good Scientific Practice” All publicly funded data used in publications should be preserved and visible for at least a ten year period

In detail… The DFG encourages researchers to consider data management issues and reinforces this invitation through guidelines promoting data sharing for experts on review panels. For the DFG, the issue of data management includes demands for secure preservation, and visibility for those data publicly funded and used for publications

Developments Data drives contemporary social science research now more than ever. The European Union expects higher transparency in data creation ‘The Riding the Wave’ report (European Union, 2010). DFG participates in the Knowledge Exchange Programme More and more national research funders adopt requirements for funding applications to include a plan for data sharing

H2020 Open Research Data Pilot Programme requires a Data Management Plan National Project Offices in Germany prepare themselves New ideas come in

German Rectors‘ Conference  German Higher Education Institutions should take an active role in systematically addressing the challenge of research data management Significant signal to German research funders, who have only just begun to formulate stricter data policies and requirements for data management plans.

“[t]he HRK is the political and public voice of universities and provides a forum for the process of forming joint policies and practices. The HRK addresses all manner of topics related to universities: research, teaching and learning, continuing professional education for academics, knowledge and technology transfer, international cooperation, and administrative self-management”
