Note-Taking Tips for Research

Note-Taking Tips for Research Read all of the selection first. Go back and choose the information you want to use. Label your notes with a subheading. When you find information that you want to use, close your book and write it in your own words. Stick to your topic. Don’t use extraneous info. Ex. If your topic is Ben Franklin, subheadings might include: Childhood Inventions Political career 4. This will help you be sure that you understood what you read and will keep you from plagiarizing.

Note-Taking Tips for Research Facts, measurements, dates, and other statistics are okay to copy. Summarize paragraphs in 2-3 sentences If you quote the author, write the page number in your notes. Don’t try to reword each individual sentence. Remember that it is a summary. It should be shorter than the original. Remember to use quotation marks. You’ll need the page number for your citation.
