Algebra 1 Mrs. Bass

Fun Fact I went to Elsinore Elementary and was promoted from EMS (then EJHS). I also attended EHS before moving to Oregon to finish my education.

Elsinore Middle School is Has math textbooks! As we are piloting the CPM textbooks, we will have a limited supply of physical copies of the text. However, every GEMS student will receive password and login information to view the textbook at home. If you do not have access to the internet at home, please let me know and we will make the appropriate accommodations. Practice and discussion are required to understand mathematics. When your child comes to you with a question about a homework problem, often you may simply need to ask your child to read the problem and then ask what the problem is asking. If they are still struggling please try one of the following questions: What do you know about this part of the problem? Explain what you know right now. What do you need to know to solve the problem? Can you draw a diagram or sketch to help you?

Growth Mindset Positive Math Mindset By Jo Boaler Everyone can learn math Mistakes are valuable Questions are important Math is about creativity and making sense Math is about communication and connections Depth is more important than speed Math is about learning not performing Growth Mindset

The Focus of the Classroom The Teacher Centered Classroom The Student Centered Classroom All students discuss a new problem/concept (explore) Formal definition Teacher asks questions to focus and support the learning Teacher lectures/shows examples of basic problems Students and teachers summarize Clarifications and Formal definition Some students engage with the math via whole class discussion Students work on their own and problems increase in difficulty Rigorous • Aligned • Balanced • Accessible

Team Roles Resource Manager: Recorder/Reporter: Facilitator: • Get supplies for your team, and make sure your team cleans up. • Call the teacher over for team questions. “No one has an idea? Should I call the teacher?” “Are we sure that no one here can answer the question?” Recorder/Reporter: • Be sure you understand and are able to describe the mathematical thinking of the team to the rest of the class. “How can we show that idea? How would that look on paper?” • Share your team data with the class. • The teacher may give you extra information to share with your team. Facilitator: • Help your team get started by having someone read the task. “Who wants to read? Does everybody know what to do?” • Keep the team together and make sure everyone understands your team’s answers before you move on. “Do we all agree?” “I’m not sure I get it yet – can someone explain?” Task Manager: • Make sure no one talks outside your team. • Make sure your team is on-task and talking about math: “Ok, let’s get back to work!” “What does the next question say?” • Listen for statements and reasons: “Explain how you know that.” “Can you prove that?” College Preparatory Mathematics 25 minutes lesson (15 min debrief with next 2 slides) supplies: graph paper and team role cards and colored pencils Rigorous • Aligned • Balanced • Accessible

Classroom Supplies Large Three Ring Binder Binder Reminder Pencil Pouch Pencils, Erasers (mechanical pencils are okay. Make sure you have extra lead) Dry erase markers Colored pencils and or pens (for notes) Highlighters Glue Stick Scissors You may buy an inexpensive calculator to use at home to check your work.

Grading Policy Chapter Tests 50% Quizzes (Group Tests) 25% Homework/Classwork 25% The Measure of Academic Performance (MAP) Algebra End of Course Exam will be used. A passing RIT score is 243. A course grade of A, B, or C and a RIT score of 243 will ensure that a student moves to the next mathematics course.

Parent/Teacher Expectations Lessons are based upon state Common Core Algebra 1 math standards. Jupiter grades updated weekly on Friday Bi-Weekly grade summary (on request) Available (call school 951-674-2118 or e-mail faith.bass@leusd.k12.ca.us) Parent conferences scheduled as needed

Class Expectations Homework 30 to 40 min./night Notebooks due at the end of each Chapter Quizzes (Team Tests – 1 Per Chapter) Individual Chapter Tests (1 Per Chapter)
