Connected Minds Is connectedness changing learners’ expectations? Francesc Pedró OECD Centre for Educational Research and Innovation

First why

A changing context Growing importance of connectedness Social, economic, political implications: skills development Young people cannot live unplugged

A simple question Is connectedness influencing learners? Our approach: Are they developing differently? Are their expectations changing? Our approach: Is there research evidence about the effects? Is a policy response needed?

Second answers

A multifaceted approach Connected Minds

A nuanced result Not all learners are equal: Age and Profiles, that lead to differentiated skills, and thus resulting in new digital divides Research not (yet?) supportive of major cognitive changes happening

A nuanced result (2) Learners have common sense approaches to connectedness in education: Engagement Convenience Productivity No evidence of demand for radical change

Final so, what?

Policy implications Recognise learners diversity Revisit digital literacy In curriculum In teacher standards and training Focus on digital divides Consider gaps in access, use and benefits Generate tailored policies (avoid universal distribution) Focus in infrastructure not in equipment Increase technology use for assessment (21st century skills) Bridge formal and informal learning Monitor changes in learners needs and demands

End Many thanks
