Presentation transcript:

January 7, 2019 Mrs. Armas Due Friday: *ENY 9-10 * Read *sight word sentences * Practice sight words Happy New Year! Welcome back to school and life falling back into a routine. We are off and running with an exciting curriculum that will challenge and motivate our young students. Thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement.  Penguins In science, we will spend this week learning about penguins. We will learn about the different types of penguins, their characteristics and their habitats. We will also do many fun writing and art projects based on penguins. We will be working on comprehension and answering questions about penguins in guided reading. Make sure to ask them what they know. We will be venturing to our Antarctica theme room at the end of the week to do some fun centers. Word Work This week’s Word Wall Words are give, after, large, house, long. A bit of time practicing reading and printing these words and reviewing those from previous weeks will help your children spell and read these words with ease. This week in phonics we will work with the long vowel spelling patterns for E: -ee-, -ea-, -ie-,e -e. Mathematically Thinking With ENY this week we be taking a 10 away to solve subtraction problems. They will work with subtraction in word problems as well. We are teaching many different ways to both add and subtract. Science We are learning about sound this week. This is a new science standard for First Grade. We will be learning about sound in our Benchmark adoption through stories. In innovation center, we will be making instruments and talk about the different sounds they make.

rk Homework Read nightly for 20 mins. Practice sight words Sight word sentences- Use each word in a sentence. Lessons 9 and 10-This week they will continue breaking apart numbers to make a 10. They will break apart 2 to make 10 and then make a Fast 10 fact. For example: 8+4= Students would break apart 4 into 2 &2. 8+2=10 So 10+2=12. Please let us know if you have any questions. Writer’s Workshop We are learning how to write opinion texts. Narrative writing taught us how to tell a story about ourselves. Now students are learning the difference between facts and opinions. They started writing about their favorite item in their collection. This week we will start writing reviews. They need to give an opinion and then give reasons why. We are learning how to write super sentences by using adjectives and prepositional phrases to make our sentences better. CAFÉ This week students will learn about the CAFÉ strategies. These are strategies to use to help students in their reading. C is for comprehension, A is for accuracy, F is for fluency, and E is for expanding their vocabulary. We have worked a lot on accuracy and fluency and some comprehension. Students will set a goal for themselves on which piece they feel they need to work on. Dates to remember: *Primary Hour resumes today- We like to have a little snack for the children before we begin working. It would be helpful if you might send in a box of graham crackers to share. **1/21 No School- Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday ****Please send in just the report card envelope signed if you haven’t.
