SYSTEMS OF EQUATIONS

SYSTEM OF EQUATIONS A set or collection of equations that you deal with all together at once

SOLUTION A value or values which, when substituted for a variable in an equation, make the equation true; the point at which two equations/lines/relationships share a common value or cross

Consistent system When at least one set of values (solutions) satisfies every equation in a system

Independent system When ONLY one set of values (solutions) satisfies every equation in a system

dependent system When MORE than one set of values (solutions) satisfies every equation in a system

inconsistent system When NO set of values (solutions) satisfies every equation in a system

INSPECTION Recognition of a familiar pattern leading to immediate solution of a mathematical problem

SUBSTITUTION A strategy for solving systems of equations that include solving for one variable and using that solution to find the other variable

ELIMINATION A strategy for solving systems of equations that includes addition or subtraction of one variable

EVALUATE Substitute a number for each variable and perform the arithmetic operations

TEST Substitution of a point within an equation to determine if the point creates a true statement

STANDARD FORM A way of writing the equation of a line; in this case it is in the form Ax + By = C where A is a positive integer, and B, and C are integers

SLOPE INTERCEPT FORM The way of writing the equation of a line so that the slope (steepness) and y- intercept (where the line crosses the vertical y-axis) are immediately apparent

Y - INTERCEPT The value where a straight line crosses the Y axis of a graph

X - INTERCEPT The x-coordinate of a point where a line, curve, or surface intersects the x-axis

COEFFICIENT A numerical quantity placed before a variable that multiplies the variable in an algebraic expression

CONSTANT A number on its own, or sometimes a letter such as a, b or c to stand for a fixed number

PARALLEL LINES Two lines that are always the same distance apart and never touch

INTERSECTING LINES Two lines that share exactly one point

CONSTRUCT To write an equation, contextual story or draw a graph/table illustrating an algebraic relationship
