How do you judge a person Novel Characters Date: Objectives Understand how to examine a character in a novel/play. Be able to discuss the characters in your novel. Warm-up – looking at a character How do you judge a person

We can define a character by three things What s/he says. What s/he does. How other people see her/him. Same as in real life.

Sample One Let’s read through the play and judge the characters based on what they say? How would you describe 1-9, based on the dialogue? is ....................... (look at their lines, choose a character trait) is ....................... (Are they level headed, angry, passionate, etc?) is ......................

Sample Two Let’s read through the play and judge the character based on what they do, based on their actions. Doug (father): (What is he doing and is it good?) Arty (son): (What is trying to do and is it good?) Hal (Friend of father): (What is he not doing?)

Sample Three Let’s read through the play and judge the characters based on what other people say. Describe Jack’s reaction to his Cousin Dave coming over? How does Dave see Jack (based on their conversation)? How do Jack and Jill react to George?
