Leadership: Possibilities for the Directing Process By Gabrielle Metcalf Supervised by Associate Professor Maggi Phillips Associate Professor Andrew Lewis Leaders aren’t born they are made: And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. Vince Lombardi

Leadership Leadership: the ability to influence and motivate people. 2008 – approx US $60 billion spent on leadership training globally.

A director is like an executive… Robert Benedetti says, A director is like an executive… The good “executive” must coordinate the various efforts of the members of this complex organization towards a specific goal, that is, the production.

AUTHENTIC TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERS the 4 I’s Authentic transformational directors are able to Ideally Influence – the director is a role-model, has a clear vision for the production, will take risks to find out what can be achieved. Inspirationally Motivate - the director motivates and challenges the actors/crew to engage with the material in a meaningful way to create performance.   Individually Consider - pays attention to the individual needs of each member of the team. She values each person as a deliverer of the shared artistic vision of the group. Intellectually Stimulate - the director is active in his pursuit of innovative ways of creating performance through and with his cast and crew. He challenges people to experiment and explore the text/material in new ways. He creates an environment that allows failure to be an accepted part of the process.

The Life Styles Inventory (LSI)

Methodology Observational practice – observing what directors do and then seeing where their style fits in the circumplex. Reflecting on what I could adapt in my directing practice. Practicing

PROGRESS 1st Project Observations – what I didn’t see. What I did see that I didn’t expect to see.

Where to from here? Empowering directors/actors/crew through a leadership framework. Other leadership models?
