Activities That Teach by Tom Jackson A peer is someone who belongs to the same group as you, especially when based on age, grade, or social group. Peers, have a great impact on our behavior. Often it’s the people who are closest to us and know the best that have the greatest impact. Peer pressure refers to the influence your peers have when they try to get you to act or do something. It’s something we all have to deal with. This activity will give you an opportunity to experience peer pressure and a chance to ignore your peers who are trying to negatively influence your behavior.

Activities That Teach by Tom Jackson Line up in two lines with each line facing each other, the lines should be as equal in size as possible. The first two people in each line will walk down the middle of the two lines side by side. They must walk down the middle of the aisle at a normal pace keeping their eyes up and head facing the opposing team’s line. You can have the walkers pass next to their own line or the opposing team’s line. The goal is for the walkers to reach the end of the line without cracking a smile or laughing. If one of the two walkers smiles or laughs before reaching the end of the line they join the opposing team’s line. If both walkers smiles or laughs while walking down the line they both join the opposing teams line. The job of those standing in the lines is to get the walkers to smile or laugh. They may do anything they want except touch or harm the walkers in any way. The game is over when everyone has had a turn passing through the walk. The team with the most players in their line at the end of the game is the winner.

Did you find it hard not to smile as you walked down the line? Why? Activities That Teach by Tom Jackson Did you find it hard not to smile as you walked down the line? Why? What kinds of behaviors did others use to make you smile? What kinds of behaviors were the most effective on you? Were these behaviors the same for everyone? Were there certain people that were better at making you smile or laugh than others? Why were some able to make you smile or laugh and you could ignore others? How did you fell when you were trying trying to make them smile or laugh? Was it easy to make people smile or laugh when they didn’t want to? Why? How does this activity apply to peer pressure?

In this “I Bet You Can’t” activity, you got to experience peer pressure. We all experience peer pressure, either positive or negative. Peer pressure is when your classmates, other people your age, your social group, or someone you admire try to get you to do something. It is so easy to give in to peer pressure because everyone wants to fit in and be liked. Especially when it seems like “everyone is doing it”. Sometimes people give in to peer pressure because they don’t want to hurt someone’s feelings, they don’t want to be alone or left out, or they don’t know how to get out of the situation so they just say “yes”. How can you deal with peer pressure?
