What do you see?

What do you see? Once you have seen the face (lower left of image), can you go back to not being aware of it? Personality typing provides a way of recognising, understanding and talking about differences Once you have increased your knowledge about personality theory, and your awareness about the personality types of your self and colleagues (and family members), you have more choice about how you respond to those around you. With this new skill, you can be more effective There is no going back...

Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Developed by Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers Based on the typological theory proposed by Carl Jung The most popular personality typing system (probably)

Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) IMPORTANT! All types are equal A successful world or team needs a mix of all types Indicates preference only (thinkers do feel and visa versa) The tests are sometimes wrong MBTI does not indicate: Inteligence Effectiveness Ability Confidence Good vs Evil Stress Maturity

Exercise 1: Preferences Write your name with your preferred hand Then write your name with your other hand How did it feel different? MBTI is about preferred ways of interacting with the world Extraverts can be quiet and visa versa But, people will tend to use their preference, unless they make an effort not too When under stress or not thinking people will revert to their preference

Exercise 2: Stand up! Es to the left Is to the right Discuss for a few minutes and then tell me... What would make a good party? Expected Answer: Extraverts should describe bigger, brasher parties, with lots of people, many not well known. Introverts should describe smaller, often activity based parties, with fewer people better known to them

Exercise 3: Ss to the left Ns to the right Look at the following picture for 45 seconds … and write down what you see Expected Answer: Sensors should lean toward describing specific details, numbers of men, object, costumes. iNtuitives should lean toward describing implied details - men preparing for a fight, leader in the middle...

Exercise 4: Ts to the left Fs to the right Discuss for a few minutes and then tell me… What is conflict? Expected Answer: Thinkers should give more technical, objective definitions Feelers should give more examples, more person focussed answers perhaps with an emphasis on achieving resolution and harmony.

Exercise 5: Js to the left Ps to the right Discuss for a few minutes and then tell me... What would make a great holiday? Expected Answer: Judging types should describe specific activities with plans and itineraries. Perceiving types should describe more open plans, flexible to last minute changes or discoveries.

Conflict resolution Predict problems, modify behaviours and solve them before they happen Provides a neutral language to talk about differences in the workplace Provides a framework for understanding problems and developing solutions
