Speech & Debate Parent Meeting Jillian Welcome!

Who We Are President: Jillian Jackson Speech Coaches: Alec Moutafov and Mac Steckler Debate Coaches: Jenna Yuan and Xander Clarke Secretary/Treasurer: Bobby Aiyer Public Relations: Joseph Osborn

What is S&D + Agenda A tournament based-club Everything from the Syrian Refugee Crisis to the Star Wars Revival could be your child’s topic this year! Agenda: Why Parents Matter to Speech and Debate Carpools Judging Typical Speech Ballot Typical Debate Ballot FAQs on Judging Tournaments Schedule Jillian

Why Parents Matter to Speech & Debate Your kids are great, but we need YOU to help make speech and debate happen! Tonight, we’ll be talking about two ways how: Carpools Judging Joseph

1 2 3 4 Carpools We carpool to tournaments, except BC + Redmond. All families should contribute to carpools 2 New this year: tournament registration AND carpool sign-up will be online 3 Drivers must register to be a driver with the Eastlake office at least two weeks in advance. 4 Bobby

Judging Each school is expected to supply judges to all competing events We LOVE!!! parent involvement in judging Might be an uptick from last year If we don’t have enough judges, we have to drop competitors Entries whose parents have judged more will be given preferential treatment Extenuating circumstances do apply if you can’t judge or drive, so feel free to get in touch with us soon so that we can work something out (e.g. snacks) Bobby

Judging Basics Parents will receive an email giving them directions to a SignUp Genius for both carpools and for judging sign-ups Can either sign-up for Debate on Friday or both Speech and Debate for half of Friday/Saturday Can request to judge a specific event, but we cannot guarantee Typically, first-time judges only have to judge Novice (or beginner) competitors Bobby

Typical Speech Ballot – 1 of 2 Don’t worry about the Speaker Code. General directions for the event. Alec Rank scale of 1-4 (best to worst)

Typical Speech Ballot – 2 of 2 Rank and speaker points (these are different) Typical Speech Ballot – 2 of 2 Please write something here! Alec You can also write on the back if you run out of space.

Typical Debate Ballot – 1 of 2 Team 1 Team 2 Xander Winner!

Typical Debate Ballot – 2 of 2 Please write more than Good Job! Xander Why did the team win? Why did the other team lose?

Judging FAQs 1. Can I judge members of Eastlake’s S&D team? Unfortunately, no! As a safeguard against bias, the NSDA doesn’t allow that. 2. For Speech: There are both speaker points and rankings in round. Are those the same? Nope. Speaker points are 1-20 (20 being the best), whereas rankings in round are 1-6 (1 being the best). People can get the same amount of speaker points but a different ranking. 3. My kid keeps talking about policy. Can I judge that? Policy requires special judging certification, so no. 3. I’m worried I’ll mess it up! How do I avoid doing that? Just write thoughtful, kind comments. Make sure your criticism is constructive and give praise too. We as speakers and debaters appreciate your time and use your feedback to grow! Jenna

Thank you for attending!
