Math Star Students Literacy Birthdays 10/22-10/26 Calendar 10/22 Nella This week in we will be finishing our Jolly with the letter sounds for er & ar. We will continue to use them daily in our writing and reading. Please continue to practice them at home. Our book of the week is “The Pumpkin” and our sight words are “and & be”. We will continue to practice proper letter formation in our “Handwriting Without Tears” book. In Reading Workshop, we will continue our Fiction Unit of Study. We will talk about how good readers read the pictures first to understand the story. Now that they know so many sight words, they can examine the text to find sight words and letters they know. We will also look carefully at the structure of fiction books: characters, setting, and plot. We will be using familiar stories: Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Students will have the chance to act out these stories with puppets and “think” like characters. We will also compare and contrast these texts. In Writing Workshop, students will continue to listen to mentor texts that provide them with ideas about being a writer. They will continue to write about things they know, making their pictures match their writing, and even labeling their pictures. Calendar 10/22 – Red Ribbon Week begins 10/23 – wear pajamas 10/24 – wear red 10/25 – wear Chicago sports wear 10/26 – wear IF spirit wear 10/31 – Halloween Parade & Party 11/2 – Institute Day/ No School Birthdays None this week! Math This week the students will be finishing Module (Chapter) 3. They will spend the week comparing weight with a pan balance. They will be using the words: lighter & heavier. The big idea is that heavy objects make the pan balance go down and light objects go up. Students will also be comparing the capacity of different containers using rice. We will discuss words: full, empty, & half full. The big idea is that students should be able to determine which container holds the most or least.
