Routine: Capturing Quantities

Delaying Calculation – Numberless Word Problems (P.50)

Nancy’s family decided to visit her grandmother Nancy’s family decided to visit her grandmother. The family drove 234 miles in the morning. They stopped for lunch and then drove the rest of the way. By the end of trip they had traveled 681 miles. How many miles did the family drive between stopping for lunch and reaching Nancy’s grandmother’s house? What do you notice? What is this problem about? What question do you think is under the purple rectangle?

By the end of trip they had traveled 681 miles. How many miles did the family drive between stopping for lunch and reaching Nancy’s grandmother’s house? Although we don’t have any quantities yet, I think there are probably some things that we can say about this problem. How is this situation behaving? How might you model this situation? What would that model look like? (Push for open number line)
