Pick questions that help you to think about Emerson’s text in a different way than when you first read over it. Answer these on notebook paper and turn it in

Thesis Thesis = author’s central claim [what] What are some concrete and abstract nouns in the text? What is the message Emerson seems to be conveying about those ideas?

Thesis Thesis = author’s central claim [what] Emerson encourages human potential yet reprimands society’s attempts to limit or harness individual learning. Emerson asserts that education must be achieved through a balanced combination of genius and drill.

Purpose Purpose = what the author wants the audience to think or do after reading the text [so what] Emerson’s purpose is to __[verb]_ his audience to _[action]_ in order to __[outcome]__ Emerson’s purpose is to inspire his audience to change the education system in order to promote self-discovery in learning. Emerson’s purpose is to convince his audience to remove the artificial limits placed on learning by the education system in order to preserve hope in human potential.
