Environmental Science Ch. 1 Sec. 1

Our Env. Through Time People constantly change the environment and have for centuries

Hunter-Gathers People who obtain food by collecting plants and by hunting wild animals * Still exist in South America

Hunters-Gathers Hunted bison – would burn prairies to prevent trees – easier to kill bison Created grasslands

Hunters - Gathers Over hunting Sloths, bison, mastodons, bears, and saber-toothed cats

Agricultural Revolution Agriculture = is the practice of growing, breeding, and caring for plants and animals that are used for life Hunters- Gathers started collecting seeds and domesticating animals

Ag Revolution Allowed human population to grow at an unprecedented rate. Farming land can support up to 500 times more people

Ag Revolution Change Food as well Food we eat today was once wild plants Farmers harvested the best from what they could find and planted it

Ag Revolution Change the Land too! Most of the land was turned into farmland, destroying habitats Soil loss, floods and water shortage

Industrial Revolution Mid 1700s Involved a shift from energy sources such as animal muscle and running water to fossil fuels, such as coal and oil

Ind. Revolution Reduced need of human labor and land needed for farming

Quality of life Electricity Ag productivity increased Sanitation, nutrition Medical care technology
