Do Now Task Government Expansion: Copy the term below in your notebook: Government Expansion: Power of the national government in Washington D.C. has grown over time.

Objective To acquire an understanding of government expansion through vocabulary and image analysis.

Guided Practice Word #1 : Confederation Task: Write the word and the definition on your graphic organizer. Confederation: A group of independent states that work together. Google the Articles of Confederation and write down what they were.

Word # 2: Ratify Task: Write down the definition of ratify on your graphic organizer. Google what has the government ratified and write down the answer. Ratify: To approve something.

Word # 3: Federalism Task: Write down the vocabulary word and definition on your graphic organizer. Write down 2 powers of the national government and 2 powers of state governments on your graphic organizer. Federalism: The divided powers between the National and State governments.

Word # 4: Convention Task: Write down the vocabulary word and definition on your graphic organizer. Use the word convention in a sentence or two to describe the image at right. Convention: A meeting for a specific purpose.

Word # 5: Constitution Task: Write down the vocabulary word and definition on your graphic organizer. Google and answer the following question: How does the United States government work? Constitution: Legal document that explains how the government works.

Word # 6: Debate Task: Write down the vocabulary word and definition on your graphic organizer. Use the word Debate in a sentence to describe the image at right. Debate: To talk about the reasons for and against something.

Word # 7: Compromise Task: Write down the vocabulary word and definition on your graphic organizer. Make up a fake conversation: What would the blue person say? What would the red person say? In the compromise. Compromise: Both sides who disagree on a topic, give something up that they want to reach an agreement.

Word # 8: Preamble Task: Write down the vocabulary word and definition on your graphic organizer. Write down 2 things that the Constitution of the United States does? Use the image at right or Google. Preamble: The beginning of the Constitution, which states the purpose of the Constitution.

Word # 9: Democracy Task: Write down the vocabulary word and definition on your graphic organizer. According to the image, what is one power people in a democracy have? Democracy: System of government that gives people the power to the people.

Word # 10: Amendment Task: Write down the vocabulary word and definition on your graphic organizer. According to the image, what are two rights American citizens have under the 1st Amendment? Amendment: A change to a document like the Constitution.
