Forms of energy Chapter 5 section 2
Objectives Explain how an objects mechanical energy is determined. Name some forms of energy associated with the particles that make up objects.
Key terms Mechanical energy Thermal energy Electrical energy Chemical energy Electromagnetic energy
Mechanical energy Mechanical energy: the form of energy associated with the position and motion of an object. You find the mechanical energy by adding the objects kinetic energy and potential energy. Mechanical energy = potential energy + Kinetic energy This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA
Other forms of energy Forms of energy associated with the particles of object include thermal energy, electrical energy, chemical energy, chemical energy, nuclear energy, and electromagnetic energy. Thermal energy: the total potential and kinetic energy of the particles in an object. Electrical energy: the energy of electrical charge. Chemical energy: the potential energy stored in the chemical bonds that hold chemical compounds together. Nuclear energy: energy stored in the nucleus of an atom Electromagnetic energy: the energy of light and other forms of radiation.
