Mrs. Wadia Nwadia@wcpss.net www.greenhopedance.weebly.com Welcome to GHHS Dance Mrs. Wadia Nwadia@wcpss.net www.greenhopedance.weebly.com

Class Rules 1) Have proper dance attire every day. Students have FIVE minutes to change clothes quickly and set up for the warm-up. 2) Please ask questions when recognized instead of speaking out. This will allow me the opportunity to give comments and corrections without interruption. Also, do not talk during transitions…this means do not talk when we change activities. 3) Mistakes will happen so please avoid laughing excessively about them and making unnecessary comments. Our space should be safe and trusted. 4) Come to class well prepared; always bring your journal and something to write with. 5) Hair should be fastened securely to keep it off the face and neck. This will prevent distractions like the hair falling into the eyes or whipping about the face in turns and jumps. (You may want to keep a hair tie, bobby pins, headbands, etc. with you at all times). 6) No chewing of gum/candy or any other food while participating in dance activities. 7) No foul language….unless you are missing a limb or bleeding profusely. 8) Report all injuries, major or minor, immediately…DO NOT WAIT! 9) No street shoes allowed on the studio floor! No exceptions! 10) No food or drink allowed in the studio except bottled water. 11) Please do not use lotion or spray anything in the studio! It will ruin our floor! 12) Do not lean or stick hands on mirrors…unless you want to clean them before or after school.

Behavior & Focus in Class Expectations for the GHHS Dance Program are HIGH and more is expected of you than just merely bringing a body to class regularly. For dance, the intellectual and emotional being, as well as the physical, must be present and aware at all times. Studying dance requires full attention during class and alert observation is crucial for learning. The ability to imitate and create movement phrases is a key element in this class.

Dress Code for Dance Class Daily Attire: Beginning Dance I Black athletic leggings Black Shorts with Tights underneath Black leotard, black fitted tank, or black fitted top Sports bra Intermediate Dance II-Advanced IV Honors Black leotard with dance tights (black, pink, or flesh colored)with OPTIONAL black spandex shorts/tights OR leggings Males Black jazz pants or black basketball shorts pulled at waist Black fitted tank or fitted T-shirt Hair should be secured and not hanging in the face (no half-up/half-down) NO excessive jewelry Failure to do any of the above requirements will result in deduction in your Artistic Work Habits grade Note: Extremely loose or bulky garments are not permitted in class because they can hide technical faults or structural problems from the teacher and possibly invite injury. Any infringement of this rule will merit a deduction from your daily dress out grade.

Class Participation Students should bring assigned dance attire to each and every class. Participation in dance activities is expected every day. Students that do not dress out MUST still participate in dance activities. Students who refuse to participate will receive a Skill Mastery & Contribution grade of 0. Students will not be allowed to do work from other classes during my instructional time. You will dress out every day…do not assume otherwise. I will inform you ahead of time for days in which you will not change.

Policies Tardy Policy See Syllabus Grading Policy

Observations (Observations are for sick or injured students ONLY and will be permitted at the discretion of the teacher. If you are at school then you are obviously well enough to participate). A note stating the reason for the observation is due the day the observation takes place and must be presented PRIOR to the start of class. Students without a note will be given a 0 for their daily Skill Mastery & Contribution grade. You may be asked to write comments about the warm up and any combinations taught, along with other assignments related to our lesson. No more than 2 observations are allowed per quarter unless you have a doctor’s note. A note from a parent will not be accepted for long term observations. Only a doctor’s note will be accepted for long term observations. If a doctor requests that you not participate and it is longer than 2 weeks then special considerations must be made and possible removal from class. It is your responsibility to notify the teacher PRIOR to the start of class.

Restroom Visits & Requests for Water All restroom necessities need to be taken care of BEFORE you get to my class or AFTER you leave my class. You will not be permitted to go to the restroom during class. I strongly recommend that you bring a water bottle to each and every class or use the water fountain in the room. We will take water breaks together periodically throughout class; however, we may not have time each day to stop our progress and take a “break.”

Extras BYOD for the studio…No phones unless given permission or previously stated. Students are expected to practice at home and reflect on the day’s work by answering specific journal prompts. Material missed must be learned and mastered, since each concept builds on another. In dance, we strive for constant improvement and a high quality of performance. Make-Up Work It is the responsibility of the student to check with the teacher for assignments missed during an absence. Late Work Policy An assignment that is late will receive an automatic deduction of 10 points per day.

Performances & Dress Rehearsals Student attendance at all dance performances is mandatory. This is a performing elective and performances are an important part of the curriculum. The performance grade is based on contribution, behavior, and overall quality of performance. A grade will also be issued for tech and dress rehearsals. Students that miss a dress rehearsal, whether excused or unexcused, will not be permitted to dance in the performance.
