Poor Willie! He asks questions from the moment he got up in the morning until he went to sleep at night!   His mouth was open so much that his Mom was afraid it would freeze that way in winter!

KEHS TV WEATHER REPORT:   Even the town was worried!!! NEWS FLASH: Watch out Willie! An Arctic Front is approaching and will bring freezing temperatures to our area! In other news….

Now Class….. Finally a kindly English teacher came to the rescue! “Why Willie’s open mouth would be a perfect symbol for words that answer the questions HOW, WHEN, WHERE, and HOW MUCH!”

From then on, the  just like Wondering Willie’s open mouth was used as the symbol for adverbs.

And they all lived happily ever after! THE END…. WELL, SORT OF….. NOW IT IS YOUR TURN!

What is an Adverb? a verb He drove slowly. — How did he drive?) an adjective He drove a very fast car. — How fast was his car? another adverb She moved quite slowly down the aisle. – How slowly did she move? a phrase a clause

ADVERBS An adverb indicates manner, time, place, cause, or degree and answers questions such as "how," "when," "where," "how much". While some adverbs can be identified by their characteristic "ly" suffix, most of them must be identified by looking at the sentence or clause as a whole. Unlike an adjective, an adverb can be found in various places within the sentence.

EXAMPLES The seamstress quickly made the new clothes. In this sentence, the adverb "quickly" modifies the verb "made" and indicates in what manner (or how fast) the clothing was constructed. The teacher waited patiently for the class. Similarly in this sentence, the adverb "patiently" modifies the verb "waited" and describes the manner in which the teacher waited.

EXAMPLES The boldly-spoken words would return to haunt the rebel. In this sentence the adverb "boldly" modifies the adjective "spoken." We urged him to dial the number more carefully. Here the adverb "more" modifies the adverb "carefully." Unfortunately, the bank closed at three o’clock. In this example, the adverb "unfortunately" modifies the entire sentence.
