Romanticism Transcendentalism

OBJECTIVES Spirituality (independent of organized religion) Reverence for Nature Self-reliance Intuition Equality

Spirituality Known as a reform movement of the Unitarian Church Influenced by other religions Spiritual state is realized through self rather than organized religion Over-soul (Belief in a God who resides in each of us)

Reverence for Nature Nature is God God is in everything Less Materialism

Self-Reliance Exercise one’s own judgment: “Believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men” (Emerson) Non-Conformity: “Whoso would be a man, must be a nonconformist” (Emerson)

Intuition Every person possesses "intuition," an understanding of right and wrong  (moral action).  Culture and society tend to corrupt our intuition (church, government, and so on).

Equality Importance of equality Anyone can be connected to the spiritual world
