Helping Your Child to Pass Modern Studies N5

What should they be working on? Textbooks: Democracy in Scotland and the UK Social Issues in the UK World Powers and International Issues Issued as required for revision They are also working through a list of all previous questions split by topic area (HW which is due every Thursday). As the exam gets nearer they will be given focussed revision sheets.

Suggestion 1 – Past Papers These are available on the SQA website (free) or from bookshops They can look very daunting , due to the range of areas schools can study, but it’s remarkably simple. There are 3 sections to the exam In section 1 your child has done part A In section 2 your child has done part D In Section 3 your child has done part E

Using the SQA website http://www.sqa.org.uk Past Papers Choose subject: Modern Studies Choose Qualification: N5 Available is both past papers and marking instructions Marking instructions are highly useful for focussed revision and for helping to create revision cards. Furthermore – marking instructions have exemplar answers. Which are key to improving grade.

Suggestion 2 – Revision Cards The idea is that the pupil creates a summary of the topics They produce a card with the key ideas and then use these to study Competition – how many study cards can they recall accurately Study buddy – share key points of study cards , test each other on study cards Opportunity to check understanding

Suggestion 3 – The Internet !! Your child can actually get some good material by using social media! “Modern studies resources” is an excellent source of up to date information. If they “like” it on FB then it becomes part of their feed. Twitter is also useful if they follow the right people/organisations e.g. Channel 4 News, Alex Thomson, Donald Trump ? BBC News , Corbyn? Sturgeon? Also relevant and useful is the old favourite BBC bytesize – it’s been updated and relaunched. It’s full of revision guides, tests and clips http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/subjects/zxsnb9q
