Lesson 2b: Secondary Survey Unit 3 First Aid & CPR Lesson 2b: Secondary Survey

Bell Work Grab a note taker from the front table What is the process to follow in an emergency situation? How do you check for consciousness? List the 5 areas to cover when obtaining consent

Objectives Students will learn what to do after the Primary Survey is complete Students will be able to perform the Secondary Survey

Secondary Survey Head to Toe Survey

Secondary Survey When Life threatening conditions have been controlled then you can start the secondary survey Start Secondary Survey Head – to – Toe Check Done quickly About 90 seconds

1. Examine Skin Color 4 skin tones Cherry Red = heat stroke or carbon monoxide poisoning Bluish tinge = poor oxygen supply Yellow = Liver illness Lack of color or Pale = shock or lack of circulation Check other places for change in color: Nail bed color Whites of the eye Inside of the lip

2. Head & Scalp Lacerations Do not move the head during this exam! Are they bleeding in the scalp Do not move the head during this exam!

3. Eyes Check for “PEARL” Pupils Equal And Reactive to Light

4. Face Check For Fluids Ears Nose Mouth

5. Mouth Tooth/Jaw injuries Obstructions Braces Dentures Jaw dislocation

6. Spine If known Spine Injury is suspected: STOP and Immobilize Ask victim if they can feel their toes. Yes? – Ask if they can wiggle their toes No? - Stop and immobilize

7. Chest Wounds Observe chest movements Look for any injuries to the chest

8. Abdomen Does their stomach hurt? Does the belly look swollen? Is it rigid? Press gently for pain.

9. Hip Put Gentle pressure on Iliac Crest

10. Extremities * Look for deformities *Sensation -- Rub a finger on Skin or Pinch *Wiggle Toes & Fingers

Lastly… Start taking care of any injuries Always Monitor Victim If they become unconscious during Secondary Survey… Check CAB’s Medic Alert Tags Start taking care of any injuries
