History of Voice Recognition Technology 1952: Bell Labs created “Audrey”, the first voice recognition technology to ever be made. She could only process digits spoken by a specific voice that she recognized.

History of Technology Cont. 1962: IBM creates “Shoebox” which can understand a few simple words, as well as digits. 1971-1976: Department of Defense funds voice recognition technology and creates “Harpy”

“Harpy” was capable of comprehending 1,011 different words which was a vast improvement from the previous two.

History of Technology Cont. Throughout the 1970s voice recognition began to become somewhat commercial. The first commercial voice recognition company, Threshold Technology, was born.

They teamed up with Bell Laboratories to create a voice recognition program that could interpret multiple people’s voices, instead of just one.

History of Technology Cont. In the 1980s the “Hidden Markov” system was created, which was able to predict an infinite amount of words. This was a gigantic advancement in the voice recognition industry, and has paved the way for the programs we use today.

History of Technology Cont. Throughout the ‘90s these programs became less expensive, which in turn made them readily available to the masses. Now nearly everyone has some type of voice recognition technology because nearly every Smartphone utilizes some sort of this technology.

Comparative Table of Current Voice Recognition Programs

Important Uses of Voice Recognition Healthcare: Used to improve efficiency of healthcare system, and quicken processes. Military: Used in fighter jets to accomplish small tasks that the pilot would normally have to do. Takes huge amounts of pressure off pilots, and allows them to focus on important matters.

Helicopter: Somehow they have effectively created a way to use voice recognition technology in helicopters, despite the deafening noise. Used for military purposes as well. For lack of time I will not go into the others, though there are dozens more.
