Teaching the Cold War in South Carolina, USA Rose Marie Craft, Bamberg-Ehrhardt Middle School World Changes

The World Has Changed Since 1978……….2017!!! 1978, South Carolina, USA-------What is Communism: the Soviet Union, no prob! (not to mention we were sure eventually we would be nuked!) Today, 2017, Bamberg, South Carolina------------Communism????? *definitely continues to have a negative connotation *BUT the first countries are usually: China North Korea Cuba THEN------Russia/Soviet Union/ USSR

INTRO TO THE COLD WAR * WW II ends---------Brainstorm: Name some specifics why this is GREAT! (I get a lot of the obvious answers) -----------------But, if no students bring up the post-war occupation, then………….. *MAPS of occupation in Germany and the other East European countries

NAZISM/FACISM to COMMUNISM * Berlin Blockade *Berlin Airlift *Border Is Closed *Building of the Wall Begins * What happens to the people?-----------from one oppressor to the next

BERLIN WALL GOES UP

Communism Caused Many Escape Attempts

COMPARING COMMUNISM TO CAPITALISM *DEFINE both in Economic Terms *COMPARE characteristics of each system, including: -ownership of most business? -incentive to work hard? *EFFECTS on the people, thus eventually the economy?
