The Rock Cycle

Rocks Rock: Any solid mass of mineral-like matter that occurs naturally as part of our planet Each of the component minerals retain their properties in the mixture. Rocks Classified Into Three Groups Based on How They Were Formed Major Types of Rock: Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic

Vocabulary Magma: melted rock, deep beneath Earth’s surface. Lava: Magma that reaches the surface. Weathering: ]process where rocks are physically and chemically broken down by water, air, and living things. Sediments: Weathered pieces of earth materials Interactions among Earth’s water, air, and land can cause rocks to change from one type to another. The continuous processes that cause rocks to change make up the rock cycle.

11 12 Rocks that are buried may become uncovered and begin to be weathered turning metamorphic rocks back into sedimentary rocks. Weathering is a process powered by energy from the sun, changing metamorphic rock into sedimentary rocks.

If temps and pressure were high enough then the igneous rock could melt and recrystallize to form new igneous rock. 13
