DEAR – Key Messages Years 7-9

DEAR Reading This year, DEAR reading will be changing slightly to build in more opportunities for communication. The aim is that pupils value the reading they are doing during tutor time more and have a chance to develop their communication skills. There is no extra work for tutors as the onus is on pupils to be responsible for their reading.

DEAR Reading Plans Your DEAR box will have already been returned to you with age/ability appropriate books for your tutor group Change: pupils can take these books home with them and should carry them around at all times in bags. Please stress the responsibility of this and regularly check they have them (even on non-DEAR days) If pupils do not want to read one of these books, please direct them towards Eng1 where they can borrow a book (before school) Pupils should also be encouraged to bring books in from home if they are currently reading something Tutors should alternate between dedicated DEAR reading time and ‘Tutor Book Club’ time (adapt to suit the needs of your tutor group)

What does the front cover reveal about your book? Tutor Book Club What does the front cover reveal about your book? Challenge Can you mention colour connotations in your discussion?

Which word has the biggest impact on you and why? Tutor Book Club Read the opening sentence to your partner. What is your initial impression of the book? Challenge Which word has the biggest impact on you and why?

Who is your favourite character in the book so far and why? Tutor Book Club Who is your favourite character in the book so far and why? Challenge Does your character have any flaws? How does this change your opinion of them?

Finally… There will be various communication activities throughout the year, so please use designated DEAR time to share these messages and partake in any competitions/activities that are launched throughout the year. Thank you to tutors for your support with this!
