FLAMINGO (PHOENICOPTERIFORMES) BY SHARECKIA MCLEOD AND DOMINIQUE DEW

LENGTH OF LIFE EXPERTS HAVEN’T YET DETERMINED HOW LONG FLAMINGOS LIVE. AT THE PHILADELPHIA ZOO ONE LIVED FOR 144 YEARS.

HABITAT THE FLAMINGO LIVES IN THE SOUTHERN PARTS OF THE TEMPERATE REGION, AND SUB-TROPICAL,AND TROPICAL REGIONS OF THE OLD AND NEW WORLD.

REPRODUCE THE FLAMINGO BREED IN COLONIES. THEY CONSTRUCT A MOUND OF MUD RISING FROM SEVERAL INCHES TO ABOUT A FOOT OR MORE IN HEIGHT, ON TOP OF WHICH A SINGLE LARGE CHALKY EGG IS LAID. THEY SIT ON THE EGG UPON IT IS HATCH,AND USUALLY SKIP A YEAR IN THE BREEDING CYCLE.
