Dugongs By Juanita Clements

Intro Breeding Hunting Location Food

Location Dugongs are found around the Indian ocean and coastal waters. They come to the shallow water for warmth and only come to the surface for air.

Hunting Dugongs are hunted traditionally by the aboriginal people. Sometimes dugongs get caught in the shark and fish nets and die. Dragging nets aren’t allowed today They are also hunted for skin and oil

Food Dugongs eat seaweed and are herbivores. They eat large amounts of this leaving behind trails of bare sand and uprooted grass.

Breeding Female dugongs give birth to single calves underwater every three to seven years. The birth takes place underwater in the shallow so the baby can have its first breath.

Breeding The baby dugongs are 100-120cm long and weigh 20-30kg. The baby stays with the mother until the baby is 2-3 years old also to drink milk.
