The Difference the Gospel Makes Colossians 4:7-9

Billington Translation Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister and fellow slave in the Lord, will make know to you everything concerning me, Whom I have sent to you for this reason – that he may know about you and encourage your hearts,

Billington Translation with Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. They will make know to you all things here.

Tychicus: an example of service to the Gospel Fellow slave (Col 1:7) Faithful minister Delivered letter to Ephesus (Eph 6:21-22) With Paul in Acts (20:4) “Timothy; and the Asians, Tychicus and Trophimus” Probably carrying contributions to the Jerusalem church

Tychicus: an example of service to the Gospel With Paul Later (2 Timothy 4:12; Titus 3:12) Beloved brother Apparently paid Paul a visit in Rome, was on his way home, and was delivering letters Provides stability and encouragement Our service Rom 12:6 “Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them”

Onesimus: an example of submission to the Gospel Onesimus had been a runaway slave Not a very good slave (Philemon 11) Probably stole (18-19) Onesimus became a Christian (10, 16) Onesimus went back (to Colossae!) Could be branded or “collared” Paul now sees him as profitable Paul asks Philemon to forgive and show brotherly love (19)

Onesimus: an example of submission to the Gospel Our submission James 4:7 “Submit yourselves to God.” Romans 6:22 “But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life.” Matt 11:29 “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Thomas Davis: an example of faithfulness to the Gospel

Thomas Davis: an example of faithfulness to the Gospel Kept his faith even in the midst of adversity James 1:2-4 “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
