This is my first time to hold a research seminar, I’d like to have your feedback any time and we are flexible to change our agenda, schedule, and even topics….

Agenda Introduction Course syllabus Tip: how to read/comment a paper Project list Today is a kickoff. “introduction: me and you” “go through the big picture of course overview Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

About Me Instructor: Chunyi Peng Ph.D from Dept. of CS, UCLA, 2013 Research interests: cellular networks, wireless networks, mobile systems, mobile security Homepage: http://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/~chunyi/ Lab: mSSN (mobile System, Security and Networking), http://peng.cse.ohio-state.edu/ Email: chunyi@cse.ohio-state.edu Office: 787 Dreese Lab Office hours: Wed 2:00PM-3:00PM or appointment by email Introduction of each student (since it is a small group) (fill in a sheet on their interests) Name, MS/PhD, Advisor, Area, Interest (expectation) Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

How about you? Name MS/PhD/?? Department Research Area Advisor Experience Interests Goal/expectation Handout (survey) Round-table self introduction (name tags) Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

What is covered in this course? Advanced topic in mobile networking Prerequisite: Internet, WiFi (802.11a/b/g/n/ac) etc Today’s Mobile Networks Cellular (3G/4G) mmWave (60GHz, 30GHz), NFC, HetNets Emerging mobile networks 5G SDN, NDN, NFV Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

What is covered in this course? Fundamental Philosophy & principles Classic problems Basic/classic techniques State-of-the-art Hot topics Recent trends Latest progress and novel techniques Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

Course syllabus Tentative plan (subject to change) Networking (mainly Cellular) Principles and network architecture: cellular and WiFi Radio resource usage over cellular (RRC) Offloading in HetNets (WiFi and Cellular) Protocols (mainly TCP) and application performance (web and video streaming) over Cellular MPTCP Recent research topics in operational cellular networks Data-plane, Control-plane, Management-plane Advanced topics LTE-advanced mobile networks (4.5G) Next-generation mobile networking (5G) Internet of things (IoT) Software defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) Emerging apps (e.g., OTT video, participatory sensing) and mobile cloud Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

What it will look like? In-class lecturing: topic overview (background) problem statement, basic concepts/principles, classic work (mainly presented by me) In-class paper presentation and discussion Per-topic One: Present the paper from recent top conferences (you or me) Others: Criticize the paper and paper discussion Note: from a reference list of recent papers (SIGCOMM, MOBICOM, NSDI, MOBISYS etc) Course project Proposal -> Progress (discussion, hard work) -> presentation & report This is my first time to teach this seminar. So the style and schedule are quite flexible. This is my rough ideas on how to organized this seminar? First: in-class lectures Second: after-class projects Any questions? Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

What can you learn from this class? Learn a broad range of hot topics in mobile networking State-of-the-art and recent trends Master a suite of research skills Paper reading, thinking, and criticizing Paper presentation, discussion and brainstorming Project execution (problem solving) Paper writing Gain experience in doing original research Hopefully, publishable results generated and long-term research topic (e.g., reading, critique, critical thinking, problem solving, report writing, presentation, team work) Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

Prerequisites Basic knowledge of packet switched networks and network protocols CSE3461 or equivalent Familiarity with TCP/IP protocol suite (Internet) Adequate programming experience Familiar with C/C++/UNIX (network programming) Need to be familiar with Android development Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

Course workload No midterm/finals No required textbook; only a set of “classic” and recent papers Read, think and discuss your class participation counts Practice what you have learned do a course project make your contributions Medium workload expected You are expected to be prepared for the lectures by reading 2~3 papers each week Course project Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

Grading & policy Course project: 50% Paper presentation: 25% Paper critique: 10% (two, each 5%) Class discussion participation: 15% (explain each one in details) Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

Reading and Presentation Paper from the reading list or top conferences To be added (course website) For each paper (several papers per topic) I define the main theme and ask you to read papers One team: pick the paper and present it (15-20 min presentation) The other team: criticize the paper The rest should read the paper in advance: Q&A + discussion Signup in advance, each one needs to present 2+ papers and criticize 2+ papers Presentation tips (see next slide and webpage) In paper presentation and critiques, you should present the following summary (next slide) Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

How to summarize a paper? At least 4 items of 3 strong points: 3 most important things stated by the paper Could be combination of motivations, observations, interesting designs, or clever implementations (1) from the author’s perspective at the time; (2) your perspective with the benefit of hindsight One or more weakness: what is the single most glaring deficiency? Design flaws, poorly designed experiments, narrow-scoped main idea, weak applicability, … Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

More on paper summary One key assumption/observation that led to the research What were the key observations? Where did the observation/assumption come from? Personal experience, or work environment, … One key risk/obstacle What are they to prevent the research from successful? Were the authors aware of them? Are these obstacles eventually overcome? Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

Critique/summary 1-page (at most 2-page) critique Two papers from the list Each student picks any <strong>two</strong> papers from <a href="reading.html"> the listing </a> or other top conferences (please let me know the papers you choose in advance). They must be different from the ones selected for your presentation. 1-page critique is recommended (no more than 2 pages) for one paper. Note: if the selected paper has been presented by others before, a higher-quality critique is expected. Due: <a href = "#"> Mar 23 </a> (next week after spring break), but the sooner the better. Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

Course Project Project scope: Team of 1-3; find your team members ASAP Mobile networking: today and future Several topics to be distributed from the list or come up with your own Team of 1-3; find your team members ASAP Why such a project? Interact closely within your topic team Have the big picture by discussions among groups Most topics are well defined, and you have a good starting point Hopefully, you have published results or find a long-term research Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)

Project timelines Team signup and project pickup, week 2 (recommended) Project proposal (2-3 page), week 4 Problem formulation, survey, heuristics, plan, … Hard work Discussion and syncup with me are encouraged Project presentation and/or demo, final week Report (10-12 page), final week I will meet you regularly (office hours or appointment) Fall 2015 CSE5469 (Peng)
