Tornadoes

Funnel Cloud (has not reached the ground) Tornadoes Tornado – narrow, funnel-shaped column of spiraling winds that extends from a cloud to the ground Before reaching the ground, it’s called a funnel cloud Funnel Cloud (has not reached the ground)

Tornadoes Always travels with a fast-moving supercell, the most severe thunderstorm (40-65km/hr) The winds in the tornado can travel up to 500km/hr (310mph)! Although devastating, most tornadoes only last a few minutes

Tornadoes People can see tornados because of dust and debris pulled into the swirling column

Tornado Formation A tornado is caused by a wind shear, which is when wind speed and direction change suddenly with height Causes a horizontal rotation near surface

Tornado Formation An updraft shifts this rotating air into an upward, vertical position

Tornado Formation As updrafts speed up the rotation, air pressure drops in the center of the column, creating a big difference in pressure between tornado’s interior and exterior This creates the tornado’s violent winds

Tornado Classification The National Weather Service (NWS) tracks supercells on radar and issues watches and warnings to alert the public

Tornado Classification Tornado watch – conditions are favorable for a tornado to form Tornado warning -- a tornado has been spotted in the area If a tornado warning has been issued, people should seek shelter immediately, preferably in an area away from windows or doors

Tornado Classification Tornados vary in size and intensity Fujita Tornado Intensity Scale (Fujita Scale) – ranks tornadoes according to the path of destruction, wind speed, and duration Ranges from EF0 to EF5 (EF5 is most violent)

Where Are Tornadoes? Most tornadoes occur in the spring, during late afternoon and evening, when temperature differences are the greatest Most common in Central US where cP and mT air masses collide This area is often called Tornado Alley
