Revision of EU Ecolabel and GPP for (wooden) Furniture Overview on the 1st questionnaire outcome European Union Ecolabelling Board (EUEB) meeting, Brussels, June 2013 Hans Moons (JRC-IPTS) Malgorzata Kowalska(JRC-IPTS) Oliver Wolf (JRC-IPTS)

Content of the questionnaire General Content of the questionnaire Scope and definition Current criteria New/additional criteria Sent to: EUEB members and 78 extra stakeholders Output Responses: 19 duly completed + 3 comments Segmentation: Industry: 11 companies, 6 associations Environment agency: 3 Member State: 1 University: 1

Indicated as main reason why nobody (except one) applied for Ecolabel Scope and definition Old Criteria The product shall be made of at least 90 % w/w solid wood or wood-based materials…. Proposal for the revision … include furniture based on wood and wood-based materials, metal, plastic, padding, textiles and other materials (e.g. bamboo). Furniture can also contain other components made, for instance, of glass or stone. Q Wooden furniture Furniture Indicated as main reason why nobody (except one) applied for Ecolabel

x x Scope and definition Proposal for the revision The product shall be made of at least X % w/w solid wood or wood-based materials The weight of any individual material, other than solid wood and wood-based materials, shall not exceed X % of the total weight of the product. The total combined weight of such materials shall not exceed X % of the total weight of the product x Percentage of wood would be irrelevant

Criteria Important to set criteria for most common materials, try to align with existing criteria for other products (textiles, paints, bed matresses, etc.), but a customized approach Environmental impacts mainly associated with production and treatment of raw materials (not with assembling)

Criteria Product description Hazardous substances % of sustainable/certified wood Surface treatments and adhesives Whole product: durability and ergonomics % of sustainable/certified bamboo, hemp, etc. Recycled content recyclability Marking of different materials Design for dismantling

Q Widening of the scope Conclusion Wooden furniture Furniture No restriction on material content, many materials: More a new product than a revision?

Thank you!
