Problem Solving with Two-Step Equations Objective: Learn to use more than one inverse operation to solve an equation.

Warm -Up G + 12 = 25 15 = 10 – W 6T = 36 H = 12 5

When solving two step equations… When an equation involves two operations, you need to use inverse operations one at a time. The order of operations say you must multiply or divide and then add or subtract. So to “undo” and solve the equation you will do everything backwards. We will first “undo” any addition and subtraction. Then “undo” any multiplication or division.

Steps: Example… 2w + 3 = 9 - 3 -3 2w = 6 2 2 w = 3 Write the equation. First undo any addition or subtraction. Cancel the opposites. Bring down what you have left. Then undo any multiplication or division. Solve. Write the answer. Just don’t forget!!! Whatever you do to one side of the equal sign, you must do to the other!! 2w + 3 = 9 - 3 -3 2w = 6 2 2 w = 3

Examples: 6X – 3 = 33 10 = T + 9 66 Y - 6 = 10 4 14 = 6H + 2

Homework: 7B + 2 = 51 5N + 35 = 90 7. 12S – 10 = 50 2. K + 9 = 15 7 8. 15 = C + 11 4 14 = 3G + 5 10. R - 12 = 5 3 5N + 35 = 90 2. K + 9 = 15 7 4H – 8 = 8 4. 3P – 10 = 8 5. 14 = 6T + 2
