New World Standard 8.1

Standard 8.1 Essential Question: Why did the English move to the New World? Learning Target: We will explain why England began to colonize the New World. Success Criteria: TSW will identify the 3 major reasons for colonization by the English. TSW explain how these reasons impacted colonization.

Spain in the New World All of Florida, and the modern Southwest, (including Texas and California) was controlled by Spain.

Spain in the New World The Spanish came to the New World seeking the 3Gs: God, Gold and Glory God—convert the inhabitants to Christianity Gold—search for riches Glory—become famous for conquering and controlling the land

Spanish Armada Sea Dogs were English boats employed by the queen to harass the Spanish fleets (boats).

Answer on your Bellringer!!!!! What would you do if you were the Spanish king?

Spanish Armada Spain sends a fleet to attack the English---Sea Dogs + storms = Spanish lost half their fleet.

English Colonization

Lost Colony of Roanoke Started by Sir Walter Raleigh in North Carolina John White was the governor. First English person born—White’s grand- daughter Virginia Dare

Lost Colony of Roanoke White returns to England for supplies. Returns—everyone has vanished Only clue—CROATOAN carved on a tree

Three reasons the English colonizing the New World Rise of the middle class (joint stock companies) Need to move surplus population Search for religious freedom

Joint Stock Companies As the city of London filled to capacity in 1600 Richard Hakluyt suggested to Queen Elizabeth that settlements in the New World

Joint Stock Companies Serves two purposes: Challenge the Spanish Ease England's growing population Queen Elizabeth I: refuses to spend money on it

Answer on Bellringer!!! Why do you think Queen Elizabeth I would refuse to fund this plan?

Joint Stock Companies The joint-stock company was the forerunner of the modern corporation. In a JOINT-STOCK VENTURE stock was sold to wealthy investors who provided $$$ and had limited risk.

Joint Stock Companies The risk was small, and the returns ($$$$) were quick.

Joint Stock Companies Investing in a colony had increased risk. Startup costs were high and the returns might take years.

Joint Stock Companies If people were willing to fund it, who would be willing to lead these English colonial expeditions? second sons from noble families. Under English law, only the first-born male could inherit property. Merchants who did not support the Church of England. People who wanted to practice religious freedom

Joint Stock Companies Joint-stock company became the way England finally settled the colonies. New Spain and New France were developed by their kings, not companies The English colonies were developed by their people who had a stake in its success (the business wants to make money).

Surplus Population Population grew from 4 million to 5.5 million in the 17th century Unsanitary leads to a Great Plague (1603, 1636, and 1665) Great Fire (1666): 60% of the city is destroyed 30% of the population eats 2-6 times per week, 20% eats once per week

Flashback What do you remember about the Protestant Reformation in England????

Religious Freedom Religious groups seeking freedom: Separatists (English Protestant) Puritans (English Protestant) Quakers (Protestant) Catholics Jews
