“Understanding how design can have a positive impact on others”. Lesson 1/10 DESIGN FOR SOCIETY “Understanding how design can have a positive impact on others”. Learning Aims: Understand how products are designed to meet a clients needs . Identify the difference between Technology push & market pull. Analyse a product created through technology push which failed.

DO NOW ACTIVITY Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of market pull & technology push. Where? Who? Why? When? How? What? Using the post it note provided study the evolution of man and the way we listen to music and write discussion questions. Once written stick your post it note on the board for discussion.

KEY WORDS Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of market pull & technology push. KEY WORDS Technology Push – New technology or materials are developed and designers take the opportunity presented by this to design new products. Market Pull – Where users want a product to be improved or redeveloped to meet their needs.

Research and development (R&D) drives invention and discovery NEW TECHNOLOGY Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of market pull & technology push. New invention, discovery or technological change drives new product development Research and development (R&D) drives invention and discovery - Companies often have their own R&D centres - Those companies who are first to market with a new product often have a key advantage over their competitors Why might products with new technologies command a premium price when they are released?

Research & development TECHNOLOGY PUSH & MARKET PULL Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of market pull & technology push. Technology push is a product designed due to something being designed, invented or discovered that can be used to design a new product that wouldn’t have been able to be made before. People might not of even thought they needed it before they had it. ‘We didn’t always have mobile phones!’ Research & development Production Marketing Need?

Research & development TECHNOLOGY PUSH & MARKET PULL Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of market pull & technology push. Market Pull is where there is already a product out there but needs to be developed and improved to meet the clients needs and society changing. Cars are a good example of this as they have been round a long time but have been considerably developed over the years to meet clients and society's needs. Research & development Production Marketing Expressed market need

Watch the clip closely discussion to follow. TECHNOLOGY PUSH FAILURE Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of market pull & technology push. Sometimes designers get it wrong. Often products are design and manufactured which aren’t well received or before there time. Watch the clip closely discussion to follow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5N937V8ZOw Launched in January 1985, Sir Clive Sinclair's C5 was decades ahead of its time. This video was produced designated for use at point of sales. Unfortunately it didn't quite turn out that way for Sir Clive.

Respond to these questions TECHNOLOGY PUSH FAILURE Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of market pull & technology push. The Sinclair C5 is a classic example of a product which, although it was extremely innovative failed within a very short time of being launched. Respond to these questions Should the C5 have been invented? Was it INNOVATIVE for the period of time? Could it be improved? Were there clear ISSUES in the design? Can you see why it failed? Do you think this product could come back in 2018? What would it look like now? In October 1985, the Financial Times reported that the receiver put the debts of Sinclair’s C5 at £7.75 million.

PRODUCT RE-DESIGN TASK Objective - Learner will gain knowledge and understanding of market pull & technology push. On the image provided you have 10 minutes to annotate (label/make notes) any changes you would make. Feel free to draw over the image, showing the changes you would make. TO IMPROVE THE PRODUCT.
