Physiological Sciences Workforce Planning Workshop July 27th 2011 Physiological Sciences Workforce Planning Workshop

Timetable 09:15 Background and aims of session NP 09:40 Commissioning costs TD/SH 09:45 Workforce planning NB 10:10 Workshop group STP requirements Log of issues to be parked 10:45 Tea/Coffee & feedback 11:00 Workshop group PTP requirements MS Proposal for Associate Practitioners 11:40 Feedback & summary

Aims of Workshop To set the context of the exercise within the MSC programme and to update all on the current status for STP, PTP provision nationally and locally  NP/SD. Each 3 hour session will allow each Scientific Division to look at their future workforce need based on Commissions and HEFCE places  in 2012 that will exit in 2015. Participants will be encouraged to think about the roles that will be required in 2015.Therefore it is pointless asking for STP positions if there is not a role for these in 2015 (JB to advise). Can the service be remodelled with a different mix of Practitioners and Assistant Practitioners ( JB to advise). Knowledge of retirement profiles will inform your decisions. Existing and ongoing workforce needs to meet Cancer targets etc will clearly be important.

Costs of current commissions Total cost of undergraduate and postgraduate commissions = approx £9,000,000 How many STP’s can we support? Do we have funds available to support PTP placements?

2011 Workshops to revisit PTP & STP requirements Workshops running for Life Sciences Physiological Science Physics & Clinical Engineering Aim to assess the workforce needs for 2015 and onwards using expertise of finance and workforce planning colleagues

Output from Workshops The number of STP positions required in your department and the region The number of PTP places that can be accommodated and that will be required in 2015 in your department and in the region An indication of the number of assistant posts required and the sort of education provision that could be accessed for these A cost for commissioning the required STP An indication of flexibility for supporting PTP students and the cost of doing this An indication if the SHA can/should support associate/assistant practitioner training
