The Rise of the Nazis 1919 Hitler joins small right wing fascist party the Nazis. Believed Germany needs to get rid of Treaty of Versailles. Symbol is Swastika. Create private militia in brown shirts.

Attempted Takeover Great speaker and organizer. Made Fuhrer (leader) of the party. Tried to take power in 1923. Fails and is arrested. Jailed for five months.

Mein Kampf In jail writes Mein Kampf. Sets his goals and beliefs for Germany. Idea of Master Race (Aryans). Other races are inferior. Germany too crowded; needs lebensraum (living space).

Inflation in Germany Germany had economic problems because of the war. Had not raised taxes. printed more money instead Money lost value after the war causing inflation. Led to questioning the new democratic government’s abilities.

Nazi’s Take Power During Great Depression Germans start listening to Hitler. German economy collapses. Nazi’s become largest party. Leaders thought they could control Hitler. Nazi’s get parliamentary majority in 1932 election.

Totalitarian Germany Hitler uses power to make Germany a totalitarian state. Banned other political parties. Creates the SS (elite soldiers). Take over economy. Bans strikes, unions, government in charge of business and labor.

The Fuhrer is Supreme Hitler wants total control! Used press, radio, literature, paintings, etc. to promote his control. Burned anything not in line with Nazi beliefs. Send kids to become Hitler Youth (boys) and League of German Girls (girls) to learn Nazi ideas.
