Bridging school literacies with worldly literacies Thursday, February 15, 2018

Before I forget--- Reflection 1—interview with a professional in the field—due today REFLECTION NARRATIVE DUE ON SATURDAY, NOON Response to colleague due by February 22

Your narrative…. . What types of texts and tools do they use? What types of language do they use? What does reading and writing look like? These are just suggested questions. Feel free to focus on anything that stands out to you in terms of literacy and how it compares between middle level classrooms, practices in the field, and how these observations might impact your future classroom practices.”

Agenda Thoughts on the interview you conducted The world outside of school and the texts and literacies that exist there

The purpose of tonight To look at connections and gaps between literacies outside of school and literacies inside of school To analyze lesson plans for connections or gaps between literacies outside of school and literacies inside of school

To see it another way… Types of literacies and their impact on students Our classroom practices What we see in the world outside of school

Broad trajectory of our course Grow in understanding of types of literacies Consider how different factors play a role in how we experience literacies See how schools communicate, encourage, and discourage literacies Consider our own classroom practices in light of previous discussions Consider literacy strategies to use with students given our better understanding of their perspectives Types of literacies and their impact on students Our classroom practices What we see in the world outside of school Types of literacies and their impact on students Our classroom practices What we see in the world outside of school Types of literacies and their impact on students Our classroom practices What we see in the world outside of school Types of literacies and their impact on students Our classroom practices What we see in the world outside of school Types of literacies and their impact on students Our classroom practices What we see in the world outside of school

Report back—the similarities and differences between professional literacies and school literacies Literacies or texts described in your interview Literacies or texts encouraged in schools

Thoughts on what they said? Implications for your future classroom practice? Thoughts for adjustments or improvements on the project? Types of literacies and their impact on students Our classroom practices What we see in the world outside of school

The world outside of school and the texts and literacies that exist there Examples of Jobs, socialization, civic engagement (Diverse SES, please) Texts used Literacies encouraged by this example Ways schools encourage or discourage the literacy   Types of literacies and their impact on students Our classroom practices What we see in the world outside of school

Lesson plan analysis The purpose of this activity is to step back and apply the concepts we’ve studied to our classrooms Wellenreiter lesson plans as example for analysis Your lesson plans as example for analysis Types of literacies and their impact on students Our classroom practices What we see in the world outside of school

Concepts or skills emphasized Texts used (remember the broad definition of “texts”) Implications for the world outside of school Areas of strength Areas for growth

Literacy and lesson plans What types of texts are used in the examples? What types of questions are encouraged? What are the messages being sent by the activities? What are the assumptions made by the lesson plans? Considering our class discussions, how might these lesson plans be improved upon?

Analysis of state standards Our goal here is to connect our discussions of literacies, the school/world gap, and empowerment to the standards we must address in our classrooms Types of literacies and their impact on students Our classroom practices What we see in the world outside of school

Examples of texts that can be used to address standard Empowering questions or thought processes that can be encouraged by the standards Application of standard beyond classroom
