Chemical Agents Instructor Course 02-23-07 Pepper Fogger

Course Objectives What the device is. How it works. Advantages/Disadvantages Operation. (5 step process)

What is it? A portable machine that uses a dense fog to dispense oil-based chemicals. The fogger was created for and primarily used in the agriculture industry to deliver pesticides to plants. Law Enforcement uses the fogger to deliver chemical agents usually in a crowd control capacity.

How does it work? The machine uses heat from a small engine’s exhaust to vaporize the liquid or chemical. This creates a vapor which is then pushed out through the tube into cooler air. This creates a fog which is comprised of small droplets of the liquid or chemical. The fog is then dispensed from the machine’s tube onto a target area in a slightly more controlled manner than smoke.

Blow off valve Power Switch Components

Operation Formulation button and Formulation metering valve in the “OFF” position. ON/OFF control and “POWER” switch in the “ON” position. Depress primer bulb until fuel is visible, then press three additional times. Press and hold “IGNITION” and “AIR” switches until engine starts. Once engine starts release “AIR” switch and continue to press “IGNITION”.

Advantages Simplicity. (Turn it on and fog things.) Operator can control doses. (Can manipulate micron size smaller or larger.) Run time. (10-20 minutes on full tank of chemical.) Easy to reload. (Pour pre-mixed chemical into tank.) Psychologically effective. (Large cloud of fog.)

Disadvantages Cumbersome. (A little over 4 feet long and a foot wide also weighs about 27 pounds.) Loud. (Noisy engine.) Mechanical operation. (Possibility of malfunction.) Limited use. (Difficult to apply to some tactical operations.) Heat. (Parts of machine get very hot.)
