Essential Question: How was society under the shoguns different from the society of the golden age of the Heian court?

Rise of the Samurai Emperor distracted with courtlife Daimyo- Japan’s large land owners decided they need to protect their lands Samurai: trained professional warriors Noble birth inherited postions “To serve” Were paid by their employers with food and land Rented land out to farmers to harvest

Shoguns Rule Japan The area where Japan was most different than China was government. Nobles outside of Heian frustrated with government, so they began taking power themselves. .

Shoguns Rule Japan Clash of powerful clans results in Minamoto clan as victor. 1192 Minamoto decides to rule in the emperor’s place as shogun. Emperor kept only as a figurehead.
