Humor & Irony Serious writing does not always have to be solemn. Humor & Irony allow for compression Humor is an indirect appeal to emotions Avoids sentimentality Avoids direct editorializing Avoids over poeticizing

Humor often relies on Irony Verbal Sarcasm (what is said is not what is really meant) Situational The situation often does not match the outcome or what is expected. Dramatic The character believes what we know not to be the case.

“Rape Fantasies” pp. 348-355 Read the short story, and identify examples of each type of irony: Verbal Situational Dramatic Answer: Which form does Atwood rely upon the most?

Explicate: “Like, how could a fellow do that to a person he’s just had a long conversation with, once you let them know you’re human, you have a life too, I don’t see how they could go ahead with it, right? I mean, I know it happens but I just don’t understand it, that the part I really don’t understand.”

Ending Questions What would you say the theme of this story is? How does the humor & irony support that theme? Does Atwood get “sentimental” at the end?
