A Gathering Storm How do Americans behave when we sing the national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner”? What happens when the pledge is said? How do you feel when you hear that America is Number 1 in the world at something? What word do you see inside “nationalism”? (Nation) What makes people sign up for dangerous jobs in the military? All of these things should bring out feelings of pride in your country….this is called nationalism.

Nationalism, or love for one’s OWN country. A Gathering Storm What brought on a war that would involve many countries fighting against each other? Alliances between different countries that agreed to have each other’s backs if they ever got attacked. Rivalry among competing nations. Nationalism, or love for one’s OWN country.

It begins…. Study the map on page 273 Locate the countries of SERBIA and AUSTRIA- HUNGARY What do you notice about the sizes of the two countries? What happened to START the war?

It begins…. In 1914, Austria-Hungary believed that it owned Serbia. Serbia wanted it’s own independence. On June 28, 1914 a Serbian nationalist (Gavril Princip) and others assassinated the Archduke Ferdinand and his wife during a parade! Austria-Hungary then declared war on Serbia!

Choosing Sides Russia was friends with Serbia, so it joined in it’s defense. Germany was in friends with Austria-Hungary, so it joined in. France is Russia’s friend, so it made a Germany sandwich! Germany didn’t like being “sandwiched” between Russia and France, so it got it’s friend The Ottoman Empire. Germany needed to go through Belgium to get to France, so they asked Belgium “whose side are you on?” Belgium said, “We don’t know, but you can’t come through here!” So Germany said, “Well, we declare war on you!” And now you have many countries involved in the war! Hence the name The Great War

Trench Warfare and Poison Gas Read the last two paragraphs on page 274 silently to yourself. What would you predict happened to soldiers who crossed into no-man’s land and charged at the enemy’s trenches?

The US enters the war On May 7, 1915, a German submarine torpedoed and sank the British passenger ship, the Lusitania. It had more than 100 United States citizens aboard who died!

The Zimmerman Note In January of 1917, British cryptographers deciphered a telegram from German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to the German Minister to Mexico, von Eckhardt, offering United States territory to Mexico in return for joining the German cause. Why is this now enough to make the US involved? Mexico
