Heat Transfers Heat goes from to The energy transferred from a hotter object to a cooler one is referred to as heat. Heat is transferred in three ways: radiation, conduction, and convection.

Radiation The heat you feel from the sun or a campfire travels directly to you as infrared radiation. You cannot see infrared radiation, but you can feel it as heat.

Conduction The direct transfer of heat from one substance to another substance that it is touching is called conduction. Conduction works well in some solids (such as land and metals), but not as well in liquids and gases (air and water do not conduct heat very well.)

Conduction Some materials, like metal, transfer heat more easily than others… A thermal infrared image of a coffee cup filled with a hot liquid. Notice the rings of color showing heat traveling from the hot liquid through the metal cup. You can see this in the metal spoon as well.

Convection This thermal infrared image shows hot oil boiling in a pan. The oil is transfering heat out of the pan by convection. Notice the hot (yellow) centers of rising hot oil and the cooler outlines of the sinking oil. The transfer of heat by the movement of a fluid (molecules of liquids and gases) is called convection.

Can you identify this? The Sun! Dark spots (sunspots) are cooler. Brighter spots are hotter.

Convection Warm air rises! The upward movement of warm air and downward movement of cool air forms convection currents. Heat transfer in the air or water is an example of convection. COLD HOT
