DESCRIPTION A stye is a infection in the eyelid that causes a tender, red bump near the edge of the lid. The infection is caused by bacteria and it can occur at the base of an eyelash or within one of the small oil glands within the eyelid. Styes are contagious. Most styes heal on their own. Never "pop" a stye. Because the stye looks like a pimple, you might want to squeeze it. Don't do that. It can make things worse.

SCIENTIFIC DESCRIPTION A hordeolum is an acute infection of one of the eyelid glands. It is essentially an abscess because pus forms within the lumen of the infected gland. When it affects the meibomian (posterior) glands, it is relatively large and is known as an internal hordeolum.

Causes of the disease The bacteria ends up getting inside the oil gland and will be trapped along with dead skin cells. TREATMENT Wash your hands and soak a clean washcloth in very warm water and put it over the stye Do this for 5 to 10 minutes several times a day. Gently massage the area while the washcloth is over your eye. Clean your eyelid with a cotton swab soaked in watered-down baby shampoo every day or two. Don't use regular soap or shampoo it will burn. Keep your face and eyes very clean, and get rid of any crust you see around your eye.

Worst case scenario of the Stye Eye If left untreated, the condition may spontaneously resolve or it may progress to chronic granulation with formation of a painless eyelid bump known as a chalazion. Chalazia may grow to become large and can cause visual interference by deforming the cornea, leading to induced astigmatism or reduction in the superior peripheral visual field. Although rare, cellulitis of the eyelid may occur if an internal hordeolum is untreated. Most morbidity is secondary to improper drainage of the inflamed tissue.

3 Facts The first signs are pain, redness, swelling and tenderness. After symptoms appear, a small pimple will develop in the affected area. Usually this is accompanied by swollen eyes. Sometimes just the immediate area is swollen; at other times, the entire eyelid swells. Styes typically don't cause vision problems. Your ability to see well at either near or distance shouldn't be affected by a stye. A stye is caused by staphylococcal bacteria.
