Today’s Agenda Warm Up Developing Activity: Group Work Exit Ticket Don’t forget to write agenda note.

Group Work Rules Each student must participate, or he/she will NOT receive credit for the activity. You must remain on task, and use class time wisely, or you will be pulled aside and will work alone. You all must work together as a group. Everybody must do his/her part.

Developing Arguments Directions: You will be broken up into groups. In your groups, you must come up with a claim, evidence, reasons, and appeals to support an argument that you will be assigned. Before you start developing your arguments, brainstorm your thoughts, feelings, and ideas as a group on one sheet of paper.

Brainstorming Arguments Write one thing that each of you know about the topic. Write one question that each of you have about the topic. Decide who is for or against the argument. Discuss why each of you feel the way that you do about the topic. Come up with a claim as a group.

Developing Arguments Claim What is your position or viewpoint on the argument? Make a strong statement as your claim. Reasons Give 3 reasons to explain your claim. Your reasons should explain why you feel the way that you feel. Evidence Use 3 types of evidence to support your claim (Fact, Statistic, Quotation, Anecdote, Example). Emotional Appeal Convince/Persuade the audience by playing on their feelings or emotions (sympathy, pity, fear) Ethical Appeal Convince the audience by playing on their values and morals (right, fair, just, most appropriate thing to do). Logical Appeal Convince the audience by relying on facts (ideas that can be proven to be true).

Exit Ticket What is the topic sentence of your group’s argument? What is one reason to support this claim. What information do you need to include in your argument to strengthen your claim?

Warm-up Which of the following states a claim? Directions Answer each question. After choosing your answer, explain why you selected that answer choice. Warm-up Which of the following states a claim? Children are young adults. Every student should be supplied with a laptop at school. Kittens are baby cats. Earth is the third planet from the sun. 2. Which is the strongest reason to support the claim below. Cell phones should be allowed in the classroom. Texting during class will allow students to remain in contact with friends and parents. Schools should remain up-to-date with the latest technology to improve learning. Using cell phones during class time helps avoid talking to peers. Downloading new applications is important to have a current phone.
