Transitions and Paragraphs

What is the meaning of transition? What is the definition? What are some examples?

Definition: Moving from one place to another Example: Sports (Moving from offense to defense)

What are transitional phrases?

Definition Transitional phrases are words that bridge between ideas.

Why do we need them? It keeps readers from getting lost and confused Good writers use transitions to help move readers from one thought or idea to another

Where are they used? They are usually at the beginning of the sentence, BUT they can be used within sentences as well!

What are they used for? Adding information Giving examples/clarification Showing contrast Showing contrast/similarity Showing time sequence Showing cause and effect
