Make Up Theory The Workplace (Health, safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 By Jess Nadal Group A

The Workplace regulations cover a wide range of basic health, safety and welfare issues. This applies to most workplaces.

Requirements under these Regulations Employers have a general duty to ensure the health, safety of their employees at work. This includes their welfare. This falls under section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act

Regulations are there to: Ensure that the health and safety of everyone in the workplace is protected. Ensure that adequate welfare facilities are provided for people whilst at work. This includes people with disabilities.

Disability in the work place Where necessary, parts of the workplace should always be made accessible for disabled people. This includes: Doors and passage ways Stairs and showers Lavatories and workstations

The Work Place The use of suitable protective clothing must be worn if required. To include uniforms that may be necessary while working in a salon or a make-up studio. Lighting should be sufficient as people need to be able to work and move about safely. Suitable provision should be made to ensure that every enclosed workplace is ventilated by a sufficient quantity of fresh or purified air.

Cleanliness and waste materials Every workplace and the furniture should be kept clean. Surfaces of floors, walls and ceilings should be kept clean. Waste should be stored in suitable containers.

Room dimensions and space People should be able to move about with ease whilst at work. Workrooms should have plenty of free space, so hairdressers and make-up artists can as engage with their clients comfortably.

Executive workstations and seating All workstations should be suitable for the employees using them. They should also be suited to the work they do on a daily basis. A make-up artist will require a large work space to handle different kinds of products for different clients.

Maintenance Equipment, devices and systems should be maintained in efficient working order. This is efficient for health, safety and welfare. Essential for products such as: Hair dryers, hair irons and curling irons when in the salon. surfaces should not be uneven or slippery, as it may cause a person to slip, trip or fall.

Sanitary conveniences and washing facilities Sanitary conveniences and washing facilities should be provided at readily accessible places. The rooms containing them should be kept clean and be adequately ventilated. Washing facilities should have hot, cold or warm water. Soap and clean towels should be provided.

To summarise: Health, safety and welfare in the workplace It is there to protect you It is there to help you It is personal to you and your job It is there to make you feel comfortable with your surroundings It provides a safe working environment Its the law!
